Convinced that the traditional society in Dublin would reject his novel Ulysses, Joyce, with Ezra Pound’s help, sent it, in 1917, to the United States, where he thought the less prevalent societal norms would mean that his work stood more chance of success.

The editor Margaret Anderson, captivated by the text, decided to publish it by chapters over several weeks in The Little Review. But the very shrewd New York Society for the Suppression of Vice discovered the obscene nature of some of the text and ordered, in 1921, that all copies containing chapters 8, 9, 12 and 13 be confiscated and burnt. The magazine was fined and forced to stop the publication of Ulysses.
